Strategic Estate Planning
Description
Introduction to Digital Estate Planning
May 28 OR June 4
Our lives increasingly depend upon online tools and accounts to store our information. People of all ages now have so many digital accounts, files, photos, health information, and other assets accessed primarily online that we can’t keep track of it all! What will happen to all your digital assets when you die? Who will have the legal right to manage those assets then, or if you become disabled and can no longer manage them yourself? A digital estate plan can be a tremendous help to you and your family in such situations. In this 90-minute course, you will learn what a digital estate plan is, why it is important, and how you can take steps to prepare yours.
Creating Your Digital Estate Plan
May 29 OR June 5
After a brief recap of the “Introduction to Digital Estate Planning” course content, this 90-minute, hands-on session will allow each student to develop a draft of their own digital estate plan or enhance their existing plan. We will discuss the various categories of digital assets to include in your plan, identify options and obstacles for handling each asset type, and share experiences and insights about creating and managing a plan effectively. Students will be given a template to guide the process, plus prompts to consider frequently overlooked digital assets that require instructions for loved ones to manage. Invest some time now to develop your digital estate plan and related guidance. It can give you peace of mind and prevent problems for those who may manage your digital property someday.
Durable Powers of Attorney: Managing your Role as a Principal or Agent
June 3 OR June 10 OR June 17
A durable power of attorney (DPOA) is a powerful tool typically included in your estate planning package. Once you (as principal) choose someone to act on your behalf (your agent) and you sign the final document, you might believe that your work is done. However, there are important steps to take to ensure your wishes are carried out if you need assistance someday. Likewise, if you have agreed to serve as an agent for someone (your spouse, another relative, a friend or neighbor), how will you know your specific duties and how best to carry them out? The key to making a DPOA work successfully is careful advanced planning. Join this 90-minute class to explore actions you can take now – as a principal to ensure your wishes are honored, or as an agent to make sure you fulfill your duties effectively.
