Sewing Skills Series: Hemming Apparel (CE)

Levi jeans being measured for hemming.

Clothing Hemming Basics

Learn one of the most useful sewing skills in this hands-on hemming class. Whether you’re a beginner or want to improve your alteration skills, you’ll learn how to create clean, professional-looking hems with confidence.

Students will learn how to evaluate garment length, determine the correct hem allowance, and properly mark and prepare hems for both hand-sewing and machine-sewing methods. The instructor will demonstrate multiple techniques so you can choose the method that works best for your fabric and style.

Each participant should bring one or more clean clothing items you’d like to hem. By the end of class, you’ll leave with improved skills and a garment you successfully hemmed yourself.

Objectives

  • Determine, measure, and accurately mark hem lengths for various types of apparel.
  • Sew a clean, finished hem using hand-sewing or machine-sewing techniques.

Course Instructor

Instructor: Amelia Zilles

Amelia Zilles was raised in South Central Kentucky and now calls Cache Valley home. She attended Utah State University, where she earned a degree in Outdoor Product Design & Development in 2023. Her degree led her to work in a range of cut and sew shops and design studios in Logan, where she honed her skills in soft good design and construction.

She appreciates thoughtful design and slow craftsmanship and loves helping others discover the satisfaction of making things by hand.

When she's not at the sewing machine, you'll likely find Amelia skiing the Beav, spending time on the river, or working on a knitting project.
