Beginner Draping Essentials (CE)

A seamstress practicing fabric draping techniques.

Beginner Draping Essentials

This course introduces students to the art and technique of draping, a three-dimensional approach to fashion design that involves manipulating fabric directly on a dress form. Through hands-on practice, students will learn how to shape fabric, develop garment structure, and visualize design ideas in 3D before translating them into patterns. This course is ideal for aspiring designers, sewing enthusiasts, and fashion students who want to strengthen their technical skills and gain confidence designing directly in three dimensions.

Objectives

  • Develop foundational draping vocabulary and techniques by manipulating fabric on the dress form to create darts, shape garments, and establish proper ease.
  • Understand grain and cross grain placement in relation to body landmarks and garment structure.
  • Drape basic pattern blocks, evaluate fit and balance, and transfer corrected patterns to paper.
  • Create a mockup to test fit and apply draping skills.
