Intellectual Property Basics for Small Businesses

This course describes the four different kinds of intellectual property—patents, trademarks, copyright protection, and trade secrets—and explains how small and large businesses can use each type of intellectual property to protect, grow, and market their business in Utah and around the world.

The course begins with a 40-minute presentation, including real-world examples, that explores strategies to protect your business’s intellectual property. The session concludes with a question-and-answer period for participants who would like to discuss their specific situations.

Instructor: David Beardall is a patent and trademark attorney who lives in Cache Valley. He graduated from law school in 2012 and has worked at major computer equipment companies as well as boutique intellectual property law firms.

David grew up in New Mexico, attended college in Utah, and completed law school in Moscow, Idaho. An avid fly fisherman, he enjoys spending time on the Logan River and Blacksmith Fork with his children.
