Gear Repair Workshop
Have some gear that needs a little TLC? Bring it to this hands-on repair workshop and troubleshoot in the classroom. With guidance from an experienced gear sewist, students will learn techniques to extend the life of their outdoor equipment.
Topics include caring for, maintaining, and repairing gear—covering everything from washing and drying to hole patching, seam fixing, and preventative maintenance. Item-specific repairs may include tents, jackets, and bags.
- Item(s) in need of repair
- Repair materials such as matching thread or fabric, seam tape, gear patches, etc.
Class 1: Prepare
An overview of different gear, fabrics, and materials. Students will learn what makes an item repairable, how to maintain gear to prevent future damage, and how to decide when repair is no longer the best option.
Class 2: Repair
Hands-on repair time in the lab. Students will work with the instructor to determine the best repair approach for their items and have guided time to complete repairs.
Amelia Zilles was raised in South Central Kentucky and now calls Cache Valley home. She earned a degree in Outdoor Product Design & Development from Utah State University in 2023.
Amelia has worked in a variety of cut-and-sew shops and design studios in Logan, developing strong skills in soft goods design and construction. She values thoughtful design, slow craftsmanship, and enjoys helping others discover the satisfaction of making and repairing items by hand.
