Machining Essentials (Pre-admission Course)

Machining Technology Fundamentals

This course must be completed with a B- or better before a student may register for courses in the Machining Technology program.

This introductory course covers basic procedures and machining operations commonly encountered in the manufacturing industry. Topics include essential safety practices, use of basic measuring tools, and applications of pedestal grinding, rough sawing of material, and basic manual lathe or basic manual mill operations.

Objectives

  • Identify safe practices in a machine shop
  • Identify correct cleanup procedures
  • Accurately use and read steel rules, micrometers, and calipers
  • Perform basic layout procedures
  • Demonstrate proper use of hand tools
  • Demonstrate safe setup and operation of band saws
  • Demonstrate safe operation of a pedestal grinder
  • Demonstrate safe operation of a lathe
  • Perform proper machine maintenance and workstation cleanup
  • Select and set up appropriate workholding devices
  • Select and set up proper lathe cutting tools
  • Apply efficient speeds and feeds for lathe tooling
  • Perform accurate lathe outside diameter machining operations
  • Demonstrate safe operation of a milling machine
  • Select and set up proper mill cutting tools
  • Apply efficient speeds and feeds for mill tooling
  • Perform accurate milling of outside and inside surfaces
  • Perform accurate hole-forming mill operations for size and location
  • Create and evaluate turned and milled surface finishes

Cancellation & Refund Policy

Individuals are responsible for canceling their registration should they not be able to attend. Refunds will not be issued for non-attendance. Cancellations received before the first day of class will receive a 100% refund. No refunds will be given on or after the first day of class.

Registration

After logging in, follow these steps to register for Continuing Education courses in the MYBTECH portal:

  1. Log in to the MyBTECH portal.
  2. Click the Continuing Education tab.
  3. Select Register for CE.
  4. Choose Add/Drop Courses.
  5. Change TERM to Continuing Education.
  6. Enter the registration code listed with the class dates to find your course.
  7. Select Add and complete payment.
