Mastering Proactive Policing for Patrol

Auditorium where students are receiving a lecture

Proactive Patrol & Criminal Interdiction

For sworn-in law enforcement, being proactive on patrol is about more than just making stops— it’s about spotting crime before it happens and handling encounters safely and legally. This course provides patrol officers with the skills and knowledge to confidently interdict criminal activity while protecting themselves and the community.

Officers will learn to recognize signs of stress and resistance in individuals they encounter, including freeze, flight, and fight behaviors, as well as the subtle cues that often precede them. The course covers building reasonable suspicion, conducting effective roadside interviews, establishing rapport, and understanding when (and how) to ask for consent.

Body camera footage and scenario-based exercises bring these concepts to life and provide hands-on practice in real-world patrol situations.

What You’ll Learn
  • Human Factors in Encounters
Understand how the body’s stress responses (freeze, flight, fight) manifest and how to recognize pre-flight and pre-assault indicators.
  • Real-World Application
Review actual body camera footage demonstrating proactive skills during pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle stops.
  • Legal and Tactical Proficiency
Develop reasonable suspicion, conduct interviews that yield results, and know how to proceed when consent is denied but suspicion remains.
  • Officer Safety
Sharpen awareness and apply perception, fieldcraft, and impression management to stay safe and in control.
