Probation / Suspension / Dismissal
Instructors and students are encouraged to engage in constructive problem-solving discussions to resolve issues related to attendance, academic progress, or conduct standards.
If left unaddressed, these issues may lead to a change in student status. Changes in student status may include probation, suspension, or dismissal.
- Probation is a period of continued attendance during which the student is expected to demonstrate performance improvement by meeting specific requirements outlined in a written notice of probation.
- Suspension* occurs when a student is denied attendance in class in response to a violation.
- Dismissal* is the removal of a student from enrollment at the college and may occur due to persistent violations of college rules or for a single offense of marked severity.
*If the sanction results from a Title IX issue, it will be noted on the student’s transcript as a formal disciplinary action in accordance with USHE Policy R265.
College Policy 616: Academic Progress (policies page) outlines attendance, academic progress, and conduct expectations, as well as progressive steps, required documentation, and reporting procedures when violations occur.
Policy 609: Student Conduct (policies page) further defines standards of appropriate student conduct.
A student who believes that charges or actions taken against them are unfair or prejudicial may submit an appeal by following the procedures outlined in Policy 608: Student Grievance (policies page).
