Viewpoint Diversity On Campus

Viewpoint diversity is the inclusion of individuals with a wide range of differing perspectives, ideas, and opinions within a group or organization. Embracing different viewpoints can lead to benefits such as preventing groupthink, strengthening decision-making, enhancing civility and critical thinking, and improving understanding.Bridgerland Technical College believes in a campus where students, employees, and the community can freely express personal and/or diverse viewpoints, so long as these positions and conversations do not disrupt the teaching and learning environment or other college functions.

Institutional Neutrality

The college maintains a position of institutional neutrality. The college does not offer a series of community speakers or a platform for viewpoint presentations as doing so is outside of the mission and role of the college.

Invited speakers at graduation, professional development, and other stages are selected not based on their viewpoint diversity ideology but rather their related expert experience and commitment to technical education.

Compliance with Utah Code

To comply with Utah Code 53H-1-504(3)(d), the college has developed strategies to promote viewpoint diversity by:

  • Continuing to share with new students and new employees the availability of college policies regarding all topics including those on free expression and viewpoint diversity;
  • Continuing to offer a learning experience for new students about the state laws that ensure freedom of expression and non-discrimination and provide the same training experience to all employees annually; and
  • Continuing to annually encourage employees to review and offer feedback on all college policies including those discussing freedom of expression and viewpoint diversity.

Free expression and individual rights are discussed further in Policy 535 Nondiscrimination, Equal Opportunity, and Free Expression found on the college’s Plans, Policies, & Procedures webpage.
