Capturing Memories

Untitled design (8)

Description

  • Memoirs Series (June 6 - July 25)
    • In this series, we will learn and practice the building blocks of story: plot, setting, character development, tension, and dialogue. Work on answering the questions to add depth to the story: Who was there? Where did it happen? What was the outcome OR how did it change the student? The difference is that these are actual stories from the students’ lives.
  • Family and Childhood (June 13)
    • In this class students get to write down their chosen family stories. Siblings often remember the same memory quite differently; this is normal and expected. Through practice, each student can develop the words they want to use to describe specific family stories.
  • Journeys and Vacations (June 20)
    • In this class students will explore and describe a journey or a vacation from their youth. Journeys and vacations often bring the most powerful memories. The ability to describe them fully helps to understand how such incidents changed students.
  • Pets (June 27)
    • In this class the students will describe a favorite pet and describe an actual occurrence from the point of view of the pet. How would your pet see a scene differently from you? Here is your chance to try.
  • Obituaries (July 11)
    • In this class we will help students to write their obituary. Choosing the words that are used to describe a person’s life can be very powerful. Choosing your own ending words can be liberating too.
  • Relationships with Friends and Siblings (July 18)
    • In this class students will develop and describe a relationship from their youth. Such relationships can be wonderful, but also traumatic and life altering. Exploring them as a writer can shed new insights and help to build a life history.
  • Memories of Parents (July 25)
    • In this class, students will practice recording memories of their parents. All humans are complex with strengths and weaknesses. Defining the whole person can be a very liberating way to remember a beloved parent or one who had more problems than others.
