Press Release: Health Sciences Building Update With Renderings

Bridgerland Technical College is excited to announce that they will be working with the Method Studio and Layton Construction team to design and build their first new Health Sciences building.

The Layton/Method team brings extensive knowledge of the nuances found in technical education. They have completed 40 projects together, including nine technical college buildings and dozens of university projects.

This two-story, purpose-built, 79,000 square foot Health Sciences building will house seven health career programs, preadmission courses, conference rooms, and a lecture hall. The facility will help to promote technical education through a branded, modern, cornerstone building at a high-traffic intersection (600 West and 1400 North). Construction will also include a new outdoor space for students to gather.

Wendy Carter, Executive Vice President, states, “The Method Studio/Layton Construction team came prepared from day one with questions, designs, and recommendations for this new building. Ultimately, their enthusiasm, passion, and vision carried them forward as the strongest design/build team for this project. We are ecstatic to work collaboratively with them as they turn our dream into reality.”

Each interior space will feature high-tech hands-on learning with purpose-built classrooms, labs, and support spaces. There will also be opportunities to display health care learning opportunities in each of the labs and classrooms.
Bridgerland Technical College worked to evaluate the competitive proposals of six amazing and talented teams.

Yvonne Manning, Department Head for the Practical Nursing program, states, “There were so many excellent design choices, and it wasn’t easy to narrow this down. Method Studio and Layton Construction understand the technical college experience. They made us feel confident in their ability by listening to our ideas and concerns and providing a plan that creates the best student experience possible.
The groundbreaking for the Bridgerland Technical College Health Sciences building will take place in the Spring of 2022 with our esteemed colleagues and the Chamber of Commerce. Construction for this state-of-the-art training facility will finish in August of 2023.
New Program at BTECH: Data Analytics

Bridgerland Technical College is pleased to announce the opening of a new Data Analytics program! This program introduces students to the knowledge, skills, abilities, and tools relevant to initiating data projects, sourcing data, transforming data, analyzing data, and presenting data.

The College is thrilled to have Joanna Coltrin, the new Department Head for Data Analytics, on board. She has been working diligently to launch the program in January 2022.
Joanna received her Master’s degree in Statistics and has seven years of teaching experience. Throughout her schooling, Joanna has had the opportunity to work with various statistical software for complex data projects. In addition, she has had opportunities to lead web scraping projects where groups analyzed large amounts of data and then presented the data at national conferences. Joanna has also published articles about extracurricular research projects.

The Data Analytics program will be available in the evening at the Logan Campus – West building. Weekly classes will be held Wednesday nights from 6 – 9 p.m. The remainder of the program will be accessible online during the week for individual assignments. New cohorts will be starting approximately every three months. Data Analytics will be available for beginners and those who have related education or industry experience. Areas of emphasis will include Python, SQL, and Tableau, while R and Microsoft Power BI will be optional.
Bridgerland Technical College is at the forefront in offering this type of training. Opportunities for analyzing data exist in almost every industry in today’s world. We look forward to having this new program at our school and can’t wait to meet the new students who want to further their careers in Data Analytics!
Emma Jones – Platinum Performer for Practical Nursing

Emma Jones, a stellar student from La Quinta, California, has been chosen for this year’s Platinum Performer in Practical Nursing!
Emma’s instructors commented that she is happy, positive, and wants everyone to have a good day. Emma maintains high grades and is helpful to her peers. She is also willing to stay late to do extra labs.

Emma started down the college career path as an Interior Designer but didn’t find that it was personally fulfilling her needs. She was working as a CNA and would find herself having conversations with the nurses about their phenomenal training at BTECH. She quickly became intrigued with the Practical Nursing program.
After doing a little more research, she knew right away that a Nursing career would be a better fit, and she hasn’t looked back.
After graduation, Emma plans to transition into the Weber State University RN program. She would also like to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

Breyden Summers – Bridgerland Technical College Student of the Year

Congratulations to Breyden Summers, Bridgerland Technical College’s 2021 Student of the Year! Breyden graduated from the Automated Manufacturing program making this the second 900-hour certificate program he finished while still in high school!
Breyden was introduced to BTECH during his Sophomore year when he saw a poster advertising the AM STEM Academy. He started taking an early-morning class and loved it! Matthew Fuller, one of Breyden’s instructors said that Breyden would come to class early in the morning, after school, and even during the summer to complete the coursework. Additionally, Matthew commented that Breyden demonstrated a real curiosity about automation, automated systems, code, and computer systems because he dove in to understand it.
After graduating high school, Breyden was able to earn a third certificate in the Electronic Engineering Technology program and find employment. Now, Breyden works at Schreiber Foods and is using the knowledge he gained to be successful in his career.
Breyden Summers is definitely an example of what students can achieve if they are willing to work. He demonstrates leadership and dedication that many look up to and admire. We are confident that he is an excellent choice for the 2021 Student of the Year!

Gene Haas Foundation Attends Ribbon Cutting for Machining Technology

Gene Haas Foundation dignitaries were welcomed to Bridgerland Technical College on May 13, 2021, to commemorate the donation of a $250,000 grant utilized in remodeling the Machining Technology classrooms, and laboratory.

Wes Chambers, Department Head of the Machining Technology program, commented, “Thanks to the generous grant from the Gene Haas Foundation, we were able to update the lab to make it function more like the local machine shops, which really elevates the hands-on training the students get to enjoy in this program.”

Mr. Gene Haas of Oxnard, California, started Gene Haas Manufacturing in the early 1960s and turned it into a worldwide company providing machining tools, lathes, and equipment to anywhere from small machine shops to large corporations. The Gene Haas Foundation has supported machining education for several decades and has given out over $100 million to enhance and support students in skill development.

Vance Briggs, High School Instructor for Machining Technology, said, “What I’m most excited about has been the expansion of the classroom. We have increased our class space and the computers by 50%, which I am excited about. It will allow me to let in students in who may have previously been turned away because of lack of space.”

The Cache Valley Chamber of Commerce was on hand with their team to celebrate the new “Gene Haas Center for Machining Innovation,” which is a designation within the Machining Technology program that encourages excellence in technology and skill development.

During the event, the Gene Haas Foundation also donated an additional $30,000 in scholarship money to be utilized by students in the Machining Technology program. Frank Stewart, Chief Development Officer, said, “The impact and influence that Mr. Gene Haas has had for both high school and college students in technical education and machining specifically is exponential. Scholarships and equipment support give our students a big leg up in gaining their education and a rewarding career.”

The Machining Technology program at Bridgerland Technical College began in 1994 and has steadily grown to provide certification in CNC machining and production to both high school and post-secondary learners. Scott Danielson, says, “Graduates have plenty of opportunities to become high-wage/high-demand employees for a number of companies that service and produce related equipment in northern Utah.”

Bridgerland Technical College Announces New Health Sciences Building

As it celebrates its 50th year, Bridgerland Technical College is excited to announce final approval by the Utah State Legislature to begin construction on its first purpose-built 75,000-ft2 Health Sciences building.

“We owe a great deal of gratitude to our local legislators both current and past who have made this request a reality, including Logan City who supported us with infrastructure improvements,” says K. Chad Campbell, President of Bridgerland Technical College. “We also appreciate Governor Cox’s support in recommending this building as his one and only building priority in the 2021 General Session.”

“Since 2010, program admissions have been limited due to a lack of physical space. We are ecstatic this building will expand enrollment opportunities for students,” stated Executive Vice President Wendy Carter. “Our students are able to graduate virtually debt free in less than 12 months and ultimately will have a direct and immediate impact on Utah’s essential healthcare workforce.”
Technical education utilizes a hands-on, competency-based model where students prepare until they confidently demonstrate content mastery. This educational model has historically provided a near 100 percent pass rate on professional licensing exams.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has made the importance of health care workers in our community paramount,” says Lisa Moon, Associate VP for Health Sciences and Public Services. “This new Bridgerland Technical College Health Sciences Building is essential for the College to successfully train the healthcare workforce needed both now and in the future.”
