Matt King – Platinum Performer for Building Technology

Matt King is from Millville, Utah, and was chosen as the Platinum Performer for our Building Technology program.

A few fun facts about Matt are that his favorite food is fettuccine alfredo and he is a big-time fisherman, hunter, and outdoorsman. Something unique about him that people might not know is that he breeds dogs.

Matt chose to attend Bridgerland Technical College because it was a local option that would allow him to learn a trade. Matt’s dream job is to own his own business building custom homes.

His favorite part about his time in the program was the relationships he made. He told us, “My favorite thing about the program was definitely the relationships I’ve built with the other students and the instructors. It was awesome to build a house from start to finish and the friendships that I’ve gained from Bridgerland Technical College are going to be friends that I’m going to have for a long time.”

Some advice he wanted to leave with future students was, “Listen to your instructors, they are there to help you. It may seem tough sometimes but they are preparing you for the real world. Richie does a great job.”

Now that Matt has graduated Building Technology, he is studying to take his general contractor’s exam so he can become a general contractor and start his own company. We are so happy to see Matt making his dreams come true and we are wishing him the best as he moves forward!

Program Remodel for Machining Technology

BTECH’s Machining Technology program recently received two grants through the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Gene Haas Foundation! The NSF grant allowed the program to purchase two, 5-axis machines and a 5-axis coordinate measuring machine. The Gene Haas grant funded an upgrade to the machine shop. With this money they were able to repaint the shop, put in a new floor, remodel the classroom, install new lights, upgrade the heating and air conditioning vents, purchase new computers, and more!

Of course, big projects like these are never without setbacks. There were some issues with the new floor being too slippery that needed to be addressed. Wes Chambers, the department head, stated, “While we are still not one hundred percent pieced together, we can function. Our primary focus now is to make sure that we are taking care of students’ needs so they can continue to progress.”

This update has created a lot of excitement from students, staff, and industry members who can’t wait to see the growth this brings to our program and the community!

Braden Hulce – Platinum Performer for Automotive Service

Congratulations to Braden Hulce on being the Platinum Performer for Automotive Service!

Braden has always been curious. From the time he was little, Braden would tear things apart and reassemble them so he could learn how they function. Braden’s curiosity shaped his dream of being a master technician and owning a shop one day.

Automotive Service instructors praised Braden for always being willing to assist other students, promptly turning assignments in, and consistently having great attendance.

We have no doubt that Braden is going to make a wonderful addition to his chosen career field, and we look forward to seeing where he goes in the future!

Alex Braeger Phlebotomy Platinum Performer

Interviewing Alex Braeger was a pleasure. His passion for the Phlebotomy program was evident as he shared his experiences, so it wasn’t hard to see why he was chosen as this year’s Platinum Performer.

When asked why he decided to come to Bridgerland Technical College, Alex said, “This school lets you get certificates and training without having to enroll in a four-year program. . . I was able to get training as a phlebotomist that got me employed and allowed me to be paid more than I would have if I didn’t have that certificate.”

Alex said he loved working with his instructors because they were easy to communicate with and they were very qualified in real-world training. His advice to future students is to use BTECH as the first stepping stone in helping them get to where they want to go.

We want to congratulate Alex! We look forward to seeing how far he goes in his future career.

Kerri Davidson – Platinum Performer for Animal Sciences

It was a pleasure to interview Kerri Davidson. Her bright disposition and genuine love for her program made us confident that she was the perfect choice for the Platinum Performer!

Of Kerri, her instructors said, “Kerri is a hard worker. When given a task, she immediately comes up with a game plan. She is always happy and comes to class with a positive attitude and personality. She also has a way of connecting with the animals she works with. Animals tend to demonstrate high levels of trust with her due to her ability to understand their unique needs.”

Kerri wanted to work with animals, so when she found out that she could earn a Bridgerland Technical College certificate quickly, she decided to give it a try. Kerri has loved the program and, after graduation, plans to continue her education at a university to become a veterinarian.

When asked what advice she would give to future students, Kerri said, “Don’t be afraid to jump in, that’s where all the fun is. . . When I jumped in and participated, that’s when I really started to learn. So, just do it!”

It wasn’t hard to see how much Kerri loved her program. We loved getting to see her passion for her work, and we look forward to seeing where she goes in her future career.

Remodel Completed for Meat Services

Our Meat Services program recently underwent a much-needed upgrade! This included a remodel and new appliances in the demonstration kitchen area, adding an updated refrigeration system, installing new flooring, and upgrading the retail area. This new look makes the retail area more conducive to a customer-friendly atmosphere in promoting Meat Services specials.

During the remodel, Culinary Arts generously shared some space with the high school Meat Services students in what the instructor lovingly called their “Harry Potter closet.” At the same time, adult students were able to go to Utah State University and use one of their facilities. We are proud of our students and instructors who were willing to be flexible to keep students progressing!

A big thanks to Design West and Jardine Malaska Construction Services for all of their hard work on this project! Everyone involved was great to work with and we’re happy our students get to learn in such a beautiful new space!

“New” Fire Truck for Fire and Rescue Services

Fire and Rescue Services was able to purchase a “new” 1995 Pierce Fire Engine from Weber Fire District! We are excited to utilize this modern equipment to give students the most accurate training for their future careers.

Instructors and students participated in a “new fire truck” tradition that dates back more than 100 years. This is called the “push-in” ceremony.  Before firetrucks had engines, firefighters would wash, dry, and push the engine back into the bay after a call. In accordance with tradition, our students and instructors made sure to wash, detail, and physically push the engine into its new home.

As a tribute to our newly retired fire engine, here is some history! It was purchased from the North Logan Fire Department around 2008 who bought it from Sandy City in 1993. North Logan Fire Department gave it a new paint job, fixed it up, and made it ready for commission! This fire engine was lovingly referred to as “Howe” or just “Engine 2” to our instructors and recruits. We are grateful for “Howe” and all he has done to help our students learn over the years!

Clint Doggett – Platinum Performer for Electronic Engineering Technology

Clint Doggett is the Platinum Performer for the Electronic Engineering Technology program. We sat down with Clint to learn more about why he chose to come to Bridgerland Technical College. He stated, “It had the appropriate program I needed for the career I’m after, [and] it’s much more affordable than other schools out there.”

When asking Clint about his future career plans, he said, “My current plans after graduation involve me applying to work for the FBI’s Electronics department. If I am accepted, I will likely move to Portland, Oregon to work in their field office.”

Clint’s instructor was not surprised to hear about his ambitious goals. She told us, “Clint is an excellent student. He’s extremely self-motivated and works really hard.”

As a successful student here at Bridgerland Technical College, we asked Clint what advice he would give future students. He stated, “Put in as many hours as you can…make sure to enjoy the discovery along the way, and recognize that you will need this information for your future vocation.”

It was a pleasure to speak with Clint. We are confident that he will make a name for himself in his chosen career path. We can’t wait to see where this determined, motivated student goes in his future field.
