Methods of Instruction

Description
During this intensive course, students will be deeply challenged by the exploration of paradigm-breaking, scientific principles which they will be able to apply immediately and directly to their setting in the Academy or Agency’s training programs.
Through the use of pre-course directed study (20 hours), in-class instruction (40 hours), facilitated group work and analysis, case studies and practical application, you will learn about effective training methods and procedures that are well established in the scientific literature and how they can be incorporated into existing academy and/or agency in-service training programs.
This course is intended for all law enforcement instructors, sworn and civilian, responsible for the curriculum design, implementation, and instruction of all physical skills being taught to law enforcement officers. Facilitators responsible for learning development and curriculum design will also benefit strongly from attending.

Instructor
Chris Butler, Chief Training Officer for Raptor Public Safety Coaching Inc., retired as an Inspector after 34 years in law enforcement. During his policing career, Chris became a full-time instructor in the academy, teaching both recruits and in-service police officers a variety of physical use of force techniques and combat firearms instruction. For the last several years of his career, Chris developed and instructed Incident Command / Crisis Decision-Making training to sergeants, staff sergeants, and Inspectors. Chris’s passion for exploring and understanding exceptional human performance in rapidly unfolding, ambiguous, high-consequence events began during his 6 years as a technical mountain Search and Rescue Technician. His exploration for evidence-based training methodology has continued throughout his law enforcement career. Chris has been fortunate to be able to work with some of the world's top researchers, coaches, and physical skill performers.
In 2025, Chris was inducted into the National Law Enforcement Officer Hall of Fame as Trainer of the Year. Chris is the host of the Trainer’s Bullpen podcast, a free learning resource offered to anyone interested in truly advancing their training and coaching tradecraft.
