Basic Corrections Officer
The Basic Corrections Officer program builds upon skills and knowledge gained in the Special Function Officer program and provides basic training required for employment in the field of corrections. Areas of study include constitutional and correctional law, offender supervision strategies, critical incident responses, and other correctional-related topics.
Objectives
- Identify and demonstrate key ethical standards in corrections culture.
- Apply concepts of constitutional and correctional law to practical situations.
- Interact professionally with incarcerated offenders.
- Apply basic skills to avoid offender manipulation.
- Demonstrate competency in less-lethal options such as pepper spray.
- Demonstrate competency in critical incident and forced cell response actions.
Most major law enforcement departments require completion before consideration for employment.

Admissions
Complete the Certificate-Seeking Application below. College admission policy requires a student to have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent.

Programmatic Requirements
Students will receive additional pre-enrollment programmatic requirements, if applicable, via email. If you have not received this email within 24 business hours, please check your spam or junk mail folders.
Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent legal resident for a period of 5 years prior to application.
Certified as a Special Function Officer.
Must be 19 years of age or older at the time of certification.
Have evidence of a high school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalent.
Take the National Peace Officer Standards and Training (NPOST) exam consisting of math, reading, grammar and report writing. For an appointment, call the Bridgerland Technical College Assessment & Learning Center at 435-750-3188. Test scores are good indefinitely. A $40 assessment fee will apply. A study guide may be obtained online here.
The POST application is valid for 1 year from submission date. If you need to resubmit your application you can do so via the POST Applicant Portal . Application deadline is November 15 at 3 p.m. A $50 Post Application fee is due at time of application submission.

Enrollment/Registration
Once the programmatic requirements have been completed, the next step is to meet with a Student Services Representative to complete your enrollment. You will declare your starting date, enrolled hours, and set up your payment schedule.
The first month's payment or completed Financial Aid is required at the time of enrollment. No appointment is necessary. If you have any questions, Student Services can be reached at (435) 753-6780 or studentservices@btech.edu or you can visit us in person at the Logan Campus!
Once the student has taken the assessment, he/she can meet with the Police Academy Department Head for an advisement interview, if interested.
FAFSA – Pell Grant
Checklist
- Social Security Number OR your Alien Registration number (if you're not a U.S. citizen)
- Federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned
- Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
- Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
The Process
- BTECH receives student FAFSA records.
- Financial Aid will send an email to students to create a VerifyMyFafsa account.
- The student creates an account and submits the required documentation.
- Students will complete enrollment with BTECH.
- Financial Aid will email the student a link to schedule a required Financial Aid Offer meeting.
- Pell Grant is disbursed.

The Process
- Soft deadline: the 5th of each month.
- BTECH gathers applications submitted during the previous month.
- The Scholarship Committee reviews each application.
- BTECH evaluates available funds.
- Award results are typically sent within 4–6 weeks.
- If awarded, you receive a link to schedule a meeting to accept the award.
- BTECH disburses scholarship funds.
