Cosmetology
Introduction
The Cosmetology program is designed to prepare students for employment in cosmetology, barbering, hair design, as well as skin and nail care. This program prepares students for employment in a salon and/or to open a new salon or barbering business. Students in this program develop communication, professional behavior, and the core skills for working in this profession. Students work with guests in a well-equipped lab and perfroms these skills with the newest techniques, products, and equipment available in the industry. Students learn to communicate with customers, analyze skin, hair, and nails, and perform the duties of hair cutting, coloring, styling, chemical texture services, basic skin and nail care, and hair extension procedures. Upon completion of the program, students are prepared to take the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology/Barbering Licensure, and examination required for licensure.
Objectives
- Demonstrate principles and cosmetology/barbering skills: shampooing, arranging, dressing, curlling, styling, men and women haircutting, straight razor shaving, hair extensions, chemical texture services, haircoloring, skincare, nail services, and other concepts essential to becoming a successful cosmetologist/barber.
- Demonstrate principles and practices related to nail technology skills, manicuring, pedicuring, gel and acrylic application, manual and electric filing, polishing, nail removal, client consultation, and other concepts essential to becoming a successful nail technician.
- Demonstrate principles and practices related to esthetics and facial treatments.
- Explain general sciences related to cosmetology/barbering such as anatomy, infection control, hair structure, skin and nail structure, diseases and disorders, chemistry, and electricity.
- Demonstrate salon processes and etiquette with sanitation procedures necessary for the health and safety of clients and workers.
- Perform cosmetology/barbering services on mannequins and public guests.
- Communicate effectively with salon guests and coworkers.

Admission to the College
Complete the Certificate-Seeking Application. College admission policy requires a student to have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent.

Programmatic Requirements
Students will receive additional pre-enrollment programmatic requirements, if applicable, via email. If you have not received this email within 24 business hours, please check your spam or junk mail folders.
WorkKeys Assessment: Workplace Documents (Level 4), Graphic Literacy (Level 4), and Applied Math (Level 4).
Please note: A composite ACT score of 17 or a composite SAT score of 930 can waive assessment requirements if taken no more than four years prior to enrollment. If you attended BTECH as a high school student, you may be able to waive the Academic Assessment with your grades. Contact a Student Success Advisor for more information.

Enrollment and Registration
Once you have met your programmatic requirements and have been offered a spot, the next step is to meet with a Student Services Representative to complete your enrollment. You will declare your start date, enrolled hours, and arrange payment.
The first month’s payment or completed Financial Aid is required at the time of enrollment. No appointment is necessary.

The Process
Apply for FAFSA at StudentAid.gov (opens in a new tab) and use BTECH school code: 014257.
- BTECH receives your FAFSA record.
- Financial Aid emails you instructions to create a VerifyMyFafsa account.
- You submit the required documentation.
- You complete enrollment with BTECH.
- Financial Aid emails a link to schedule a required Financial Aid Offer meeting.
- Pell Grant is disbursed (if eligible).

The Process
- Soft deadline: the 5th of each month.
- BTECH gathers applications submitted during the previous month.
- The Scholarship Committee reviews each application.
- BTECH evaluates available funds.
- Award results are typically sent within 4–6 weeks.
- If awarded, you receive a link to schedule a meeting to accept the award.
- BTECH disburses scholarship funds.
