Special Function Officer
The Special Function Officer program provides the required basic training necessary before students can advance into training as a corrections or law enforcement officer in the State of Utah. The program provides an excellent initial approach to a law enforcement or corrections career. In this course, students will study the core legal, behavioral health, defensive tactics, patrol, criminal investigation procedures, arrest control techniques, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/First Aid.

- Identify and demonstrate key ethical standards in law enforcement.
- Demonstrate appropriate physical fitness.
- Apply concepts of Utah Law to practical situations.
- Create professional reports from citizen contacts.
- Perform basic defensive tactics and arrest skills.
- Identify persons in crisis and apply de-escalation techniques.

Admissions
Complete the admissions form below. College admission policy requires a student to have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent.

Programmatic Requirements
Students will receive additional pre-enrollment programmatic requirements, if applicable, via email. If you have not received this email within 24 business hours, please check your spam or junk mail folders.
- Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent legal resident for a period of 5 years prior to application.
- Must be 19 years of age or older at the time of registration.
- Have evidence of a high school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalent.
- Submit the completed application via the POST Applicant Portal (opens in a new tab) on or before the application deadline of November 15 at 3 p.m. A $50 POST application fee is due upon submission. POST application is valid for 1 year from submission date.
- Academic Assessment (NPOST): Basic reading, basic math, grammar, and writing. Call (435) 750-3188 to schedule an appointment. A $40 assessment fee will apply. A study guide may be obtained online here (opens in a new tab).

Enrollment/Registration
Once the programmatic requirements have been completed, the next step is to meet with a Student Services Representative to complete your enrollment. You will declare your starting date, enrolled hours, and set up your payment schedule.
The first month's payment or completed Financial Aid is required at the time of enrollment. No appointment is necessary. Questions? Call (435) 753-6780 or email studentservices@btech.edu, or visit in person at the Logan Campus.
After the student has taken the assessment, he/she can meet with the Police Academy Department Head for an advisement interview, if interested.

The Process
- Soft deadline: the 5th of each month.
- BTECH gathers applications submitted during the previous month.
- The Scholarship Committee reviews each application.
- BTECH evaluates available funds.
- Award results are typically sent within 4–6 weeks.
- If awarded, you receive a link to schedule a meeting to accept the award.
- BTECH disburses scholarship funds.
